Hello,
solution to this and you are able to keep your external link for the menu item.
Go to the menu item you are having a problem with and change it from external link to text separator.
Delete the date from the alias box and save, not save & quit.
Once it saves, change it back to an external link and for the URL, use #
Your menu item will no longer have the date and will work the way you want.
