Is it difficult to get rid of bed bugs?
The short answer is yes. This isn't a problem that can be solved by accessing the cockroach spray can you keep under the kitchen sink.
Even professional pest control companies generally expect at least two treatments to completely get rid of the bed bugs in your home. Why is it difficult to get rid of bed bugs? There are many reasons why bed bugs can be difficult to eliminate.
Here's the deal:
Pyrethroids (pesticides) resistance - Pyrethroids are a class of chemicals that are commonly used in pest management applications. Most pyrethroids have low toxicity to mammals (humans and pets) and birds, are fast acting and require low doses of active ingredients to kill insects. However, some bed bugs have developed resistance to this class of chemicals. Entomologists compared mortality rates from bed bugs raised in the laboratory for 30 years (no exposure to pyrethroids) versus bed bugs collected from homes across the country. The mortality rate of laboratory-bred bed bugs was 100% upon introduction of a pyrethroid insecticide. Field collected bed bugs showed close immunity to pyrethroid pesticides. There are varying degrees of resistance depending on the number of bed bugs, but all experts agree that pyrethroid resistance contributes to the difficulty of getting rid of bed bugs.
Bed bugs breed quickly - Another factor that makes bed bugs difficult to get rid of is how quickly they reproduce. The number of eggs a female bed bug lays in her life depends on her access to blood meals. The average lifespan of bed bugs is about one year. Bed bugs usually feed every 3-7 days if a meal is available. A single female can lay about 113 eggs in her lifetime. Under optimal conditions, the current host, and a comfortable air-conditioning temperature, the number of bed bugs can double every 16 days.

Bed Bug Behavior - The activity, habits, and behavior inherent in bed bugs make getting rid of them difficult. Bed bugs have a secret lifestyle. They are active at night and clump together in small crevices and crevices during the day. Their flat bodies enable them to fit into an incision no more than a toothpick wide. They prefer staying near their next meal (your bed or sofa) and often clustered in tufts and creases in mattress, box springs, bed frames, headboards and side tables. They are also often found behind wall panels and baseboards. Bed bugs do not have a central "nest" like ants or termites. They are prone to wandering. If a pregnant female remains after treatment for bed bugs, the infestation process can begin again. The behavior of bed bugs combined with their life cycle makes them a difficult pest to eliminate.
The current bed bug infestation began in the United States in the 1990s. It's not yet ingrained in our culture to be vigilant when staying in hotels or vacation rentals, or thoroughly examining the used furniture you bring home.
A one night stay in an infested room is sufficient to bring home bed bugs in your bags. Once introduced, it often takes several months to realize that the itch on your skin is caused by bed bugs.
