PART A: Inventory Management/ ABC analysis (50 marks)

The Dynaco Company stocks a variety of parts and materials it uses in its manufacturing processes. Recently, as demand for its finished goods has increased, management has had difficulty managing parts inventory; they frequently run out of some crucial parts and seem to have an endless supply of others. In an effort to control inventory more effectively, they would like to classify their inventory of parts according to the ABC approach. Following is a list of selected parts and the annual usage and unit value for each:
Item number Annual usage (items/year) Unit cost ($) Item number Annual usage (items/year) Unit cost ($)
    1 36 350 16 60 $ 610
    2 150 30 17 120 20
    3 50 23 18 270 15
    4 300 45 19 45 50
    5 18 1,900 20 19 3,200
    6 500 8 21 910 3
    7 710 4 22 12 4,750

    14 10 3 29 46 160
    15 820 1 30 165 25

    II- CONCEPT TO REFLECT ON
    ur Workforce for the
Prepare Your Workforce for the Automation Age
By Christoph Knoess, Ron Harbour and Steve Scemama, November 2016
The internet has dramatically changed the way companies operate. Massive data storage capacity, super-fast data transmission and mobility devices—along with slick application program interfaces—have left companies scrambling to adapt.
Today, innovations in digitization and robotization are quickly laying the foundation for another disruptive corporate transformation. For example, Anheuser-Busch, working with Uber (and Otto), just delivered 2,000 cases of Budweiser in a self-driving truck. Commerzbank has announced plans to digitize 80% of its processes within three years. We estimate that robotization, digitization, digital self-services, distributed digital advice and sales, and robo-advisors could result in a 60-70% reduction in the workforces of service providers, from financial services to telecom. Manufacturers have already seen reductions, albeit at lower levels. The pace of robot adoption may surprise us, just as the internet spread more quickly than many anticipated.
But companies will only be able to realize productivity gains from these new operating models if they skillfully manage the soft side of their automation transformation—the people in what will be a vastly different organization. As companies introduce software bots and digital self-service, and as they transform assembly lines, they must bring along their key employees, leaders, and customers as they redefine jobs, career paths, workforce management, and social contracts. Executives must think carefully about how to best match people and machines, bearing in mind that many of the decisions they make today will have a long-tail effect on workforce composition, productivity, and profits for years to come.
As workforces hollow out, the remaining employees will be highly specialized and experienced business/technology hybrids—a new breed of professional who can work in highly distributed environments and shift from managing people to managing experiences and technology. In the back-office, the lights will dim, as work is shifted to the customer or other parts of the value chain. In the middle office, risk and compliance management will largely watch bots that are not prone to human error or fraud, supported by sophisticated models to predict quality and compliance issues. In the front office, automation based on predictive analytics will leave only managers who can control sophisticated robo-advisors trusted by customers. Salespeople will be disrupted as customers link with algorithmic bots to obtain products contextually presented at the (digital) point of need—often dominated by the global platforms that link retail, financial services, entertainment and communications in sticky ways.
Will this happen overnight? No. Disruption rarely occurs as soon as expected. Freeways full of driverless cars and beer trucks are still far off, because of technological and regulatory limitations. But the inflection point always happens faster than expected. As always with technology adoption, there is an S-curve, already being scribbled by early adopters; when the inflection point is reached, expect sudden acceleration. So early preparation is needed.
    Lessons from automakers
To figure out how to effectively integrate software robots and digitization, executives can take some cues from the automotive industry. After decades of introducing physical robots and automation, some automakers’ factories require three to six months to launch an entirely new vehicle, while others need no more than a day. But the most automated carmakers are not necessarily the most efficient.
Instead, the nimblest factories have been pragmatic about integrating automation so that new processes can run smoothly, with continuous improvement—so that only the simplest, most repetitive processes are automated. Over the past two decades, leading automakers have automated their paint and body shops—where they see the greatest gains—but have also retained and retrained the people required to quickly redesign products and processes on more complex tasks. Automakers have used automation gains to configure and fund increased customization; assembly lines are run by humans who build customized vehicles, choosing from as many as 55,000 parts.
The lesson: Change needs to be evolutionary, even if the impact of automation is ultimately revolutionary. Don’t throw away your core capability, until you are sure automation is better, faster, cheaper. As you prepare for the inflection point, be pragmatic about cost-benefit tradeoffs. Think about the overall organization in an automated world. Be mindful of the critical skills you need to retain, and the skills you need to build up. Take a full end-to-end view. Think both short term and long term. Build strategic advantage through the gains you achieve, beyond cost.
    Parallel work streams
The lessons to date on driving digitization and robotics suggest operating on a dual track. Strike the right balance between implementing short-term automation fixes and opportunities, while seeking solutions to problems that will determine success in the long run. It takes time for clients and employees to adapt to monumental change. Thus, it is as important to get long-term organizational change underway as it is to rapidly exploit near-term efficiency.
To that end, managers should develop a list of 10 to 15 processes that bots can quickly improve. Test and learn, both in the application of the right bots to the right problem, and how to redesign processes end-to-end to maximize results. Simultaneously test and learn on the soft side of automation. Blueprint the broader impact on roles, skills, controls, leadership, workforce and talent management, and social contracts.
By doing so, managers can move critical employees and clients closer to their longer term automation ambitions—which can be funded at least in part with returns from the earlier automation of simpler tasks.
    Mold the organization
As more processes are digitized in every part of an organization, executives must think at a macro level about the entire enterprise, even as the organization is changing. How do you hire today for a diminished workforce 10 years out? When more and more of your people are replaced by bots, how do you lead, enforce quality control, and audit? The key to navigating through the coming automation age will be identifying and retaining the employees who can make one transition after another.
Companies will experience huge changes as physical infrastructure disappears, offshore capabilities are repatriated, more services become self-service and virtual, and customers begin to interact more with robots. Automation will transform not just production, but operating models. Start early to shift the leadership mindset. Actively drive customer adoption by adjusting your pricing and loyalty incentives to encourage early adopters, while simultaneously having your own employees co-service them with the same tools. Initially, customers should be allowed easy and seamless access to people as a fallback to self-service and other digital offerings. Assess the impact on your social contracts to both your employees and the communities you serve. Engage local stakeholders and unions early in discussions of how you can continue to give back to the community with a smaller workforce. Build a picture of the future state and work backwards.
There is time before the inflection point—time to prepare with purpose and pilots. Focus not just on the technology and analytics, the shiny object, but on people and a new form of leadership.

    The TMA is intended to:
    • Develop your evaluative skills in analyzing, discussing, and explaining different factors that are influencing and affecting demand for goods and services.
    • Develop your evaluative skills in explaining why a monopolistically competitive firm has downward sloping demand and marginal revenue curves.
    • Identify the key factors that determine a firm’s success.
    • Analyse the situation of a monopolistically competitive firm in the long run.

    The TMA:
Please read the following article and answer the question listed below:

    The TMA Question:
Discuss and analysethe most important key points in the above article in the light of factors that affect the demand for coffee.

Guidance notes to answer the TMA question:
To answer the above TMA question, you are required to write a structured essay of no more than 1200 words. This means that your TMA should be in the three parts as follows:
    Part a)
In this part you need to discuss the important key points in the above article. Discuss what you learned from the above article; What are the most important factors affecting the demand for coffee in the middle east in general or in the country you are living in.This part of the TMA should not exceed 500 words.(40 points)
    Part (b)
In this part of the TMA you are required to select course concepts from chapters4or 5, Economics and Economic Changes textbook, and use these concepts to analyse the situation described in the above article.Suppose that the government restricts the total number of new branches that can be opened by all chains, how would this affect the equilibrium price and chains profits of coffee market? This part should not exceed 400 words. (30 points)
    Part (c)
Use demand and marginal revenue and cost curve graphs to show how can Costa ensure maintaining a profit margin over its competitors for a longer period of time before economic profits becomes zero?Explain your graphs in details showing which point, at equilibrium, all firms in the market will earn zero profits. You should spend no more than 300 words on this part of the TMA. You are expected to draw the graphs by hand and scan it into your TMA. (10 points for graphs and 20 points for discussion).
Your essay should be within the specified range of words. You are expected to present a well-structured and organized piece of work that is of your own. Plagiarism will be strictly penalized based on AOU policies. The assessment of the quality of your essay will be based on how you impress the reader (grader) about your knowledge and understanding of the topic. Please use your own words and avoid using copy-paste. When you write your TMA, you should take into consideration the following issues:

    1. The TMA must be written in ESSAY (discussion) format. Avoid writing TMA in first person tense. E.g. “I suggest that …” or “In this TMA I am going to discuss…”etc. A maximum of 5 marks will be deducted from the total marks as a penalty for poor presentation.
    2. Words count should be within the specified words limit with 10%(More/less) tolerance. This includes the words limit specified to each of the three parts of the essay that are mentioned above. A maximum of 5 marks out of the total marks will be deducted as a penalty against violating this requirement.

    ARAB OPEN UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF BUSINESS STUDIES T205A – SYSTEMS’ THINKING THEORY & PRACTICE
    2017/2018 SEMESTER II – Spring 2018

    T205 A -TMA- Semester II - 2017 – 2018
    _____________________________________

Please read these instructions carefully, and contact your tutor if you require any further clarifications. You should submit your completed assignment to your tutor to arrive no later than the cut-off Date (April, 2018).

Please use standard A4 size paper for submitting the hard copy of your TMA. Your name, personal identifier, course and assignment numbers must appear at the top of each sheet. A soft copy of your TMA must be uploaded to the university moodle within the indicated cut-off date. The hard & soft copies must be identical. Please leave wide margins and space at the end of each sheet for tutor comments. It is better to use double spacing so that you can easily handwrite corrections to your drafts and tutors have space to include their feedback on the script. Start each question in the assignment on a new page. Any extended text should ideally be word-processed, but, diagrams and accompanying notes may be hand drawn and hand written and on an A4 paper.

    Completing and sending your assignments
When you have completed your TMA, you must fill in the assignment form (PT3), taking care to fill all information correctly including your personal identifier, course code, section & tutor, and assignment numbers. Each TMA and its PT3 form should be uploaded on the AOU branch moodle within the cut-off date. Late submissions require approval from the branch course coordinator and will be subject to grade deductions. All assignments are treated in strict confidence.
If you feel that you are unable to meet the cut-off date of the TMA because of unusual circumstances, please contact your tutor as soon as possible to discuss a possible extension to the cut-off date.

    Plagiarism
The Arab Open University Definitions of cheating and plagiarism
According to the Arab Open University By-laws, “The following acts represent cases of cheating and plagiarism:
    • Verbatim copying of printed material and submitting them as part of TMAs without proper academic acknowledgement and documentation.
    • Verbatim copying of material from the Internet, including tables and graphics.
    • Copying other students’ notes or reports.
    • Using paid or unpaid material prepared for the student by individuals or firms.
    • Utilization of, or proceeding to utilize, contraband materials or devices in examinations.”

    Penalty on plagiarism
The following is the standard plagiarism penalty applied across branches as per Article 11 of the university by-laws:
    1) Awarding of zero for a TMA wherein more than 20% of the content is plagiarized.
    2) Documentation of warning in student record.
    3) Failure in the course to dismissal from the University.
All University programmes are required to apply penalties that are consistent with the University by laws.

    Examples of Plagiarism

Copying from a single or multiple sources, this is where the student uses one or more of the following as the basis for the whole, or a good part, of the assignment:
    1. Published or unpublished books, articles or reports
    2. The Internet
    3. The media (e.g.TV programmes, radio programmes or newspaper articles)
    4. An essay from an essay bank
    5. A piece of work previously submitted by another student
    6. Copying from a text which is about to be submitted for the same assignment

    Introduction
This TMA has one question with three sub sections. You should answer them all. The questions in this assignment are all about different aspects of the process of exploring a complex situation.

    Question 1 (100% marks)

You are strongly advised to use the AOU e-library to locate additional relevant resources which can support your analysis and argument. This will earn you extra points.

    (a) Read through the attached article “Case II: Conflict Recognition-The Case of the Misdirected Faculty”, as you read through the article, create one Spray diagram to summarize the different ideas of the article respecting the conventions, and techniques. It is advised that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words. (15 Marks)

    (b) Based on what you learned in T205A (T552/Diagramming), and on the content of the article, and taking conflict as your system of interest draw a System Map diagram to show all the components of such a system. The system map should include all the components of the system paying special attention to the grouping and the hierarchy. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words (15 Marks)

    (c) Based on what you learned in T205A concept files 01, 02, and T551 Linear Programming:

1- Analyze the type of situations discussed in the case; justify your answer based on what you learned in T551 linear programing (Word Count 400; 10 Marks).

2- Assess the validity of applying each of the three ways of thinking (causal, logical, and reductionist) for understanding the problem discussed in the case. (Word Count 500; 15 Marks).
3- Discuss the different types of contracts which govern the relationship between employers and their employees and assess how each one is manifested in the case. Analyze whether a breach has occurred and what are its causes and effects (Word Count 500; 15 Marks).
4- Discuss the concepts of communication, active listening, employee empowerment, motivation and PRP, and assess how the head of the department in the article is applying those when dealing with his subordinates. (Word count 600 Marks, 15 Marks).
5- Describe what is meant by conflict, its nature and sources. Then analyze the sources of the conflict in the case and assess how and whether applying the systems approach to the problem in the case can improve and enlighten understanding (Word Count 600; 10 Marks).
6- Using a systems’ approach, and relying on concepts covered in concept file 02, assess possible ways for resolving the conflict taking place. (Word count 300, 05 Marks)

(2000 words) (70 marks) (Please see guidance below)

General Mark’s deductions of 20% as follows
    • PT3 Form (failure to use the PT3 completely filled) (deduct up to 5% marks)
    • TMA Presentation and Structure, and word count (untidy, work way below or above the word count, no display of word count) (deduct up to 5% marks)
    • Referencing and in-text citation (poor referencing and in-text citation, without plagiarism, (deduct up to 10% marks).

    TMA Guidance to students

    (a) Note that the submission for this question requires your rough spray diagrams, and a condensed or tided up version. You should do your best to follow the conventions for the spray diagram as explained in T552. It is also important that the diagram communicates to your tutor, so make sure the writing is legible and not too small. However, don't redraw your initial rough spray diagrams just to tidy them up; we want to see what you drew as you worked. You need to identify the main idea of the article and include it within your central topic, and then identify the most important points and include them within the subtopics blobs then branch out as explained in T552 appendix (A1.1.)
    (b) Here you are required to draw a system map, which includes all the relevant components of the “US Health Care System” as discussed in the case without neglecting the assumptions. Your tutor’s feedback will be helpful in clarifying to you any misconceptions you might have about drawing the diagram and it will also help in assessing your diagramming skills.

    (c) Here you are required to draw back on concepts learned in T551 and Concept file 02 (as relevant) in order to analyze the questions. Please remember that for each section you need to provide a clear theoretical discussion, and then explain how those concepts are applied in the case on hand. Again you are strongly advised to use your own words to discuss the concepts as you understood them. Do not copy material from the books since it will have a negative impact on your grade, and very importantly do not get consumed in a purely theoretical analysis without assessing how these concepts are applied in the case study. Make sure to respect the word count as it is an indicator to you of the depth of analysis required. Please remember that failure to paraphrase, and to reference will also lead to failing the TMA.

There are different ways to tackle and structure your ideas. Please remember that your work should be structured in an essay format with a clear introduction, then possibly different subsections (as needed) to assess each idea and a conclusion.
The introduction should set out the topic of the discussion clearly. For each of the body paragraphs/sub-sections you need to provide a clear theoretical discussion which explains how the relevant course concepts are related to the article on hand. The conclusion should summarize your findings and reflect on your learning. You should not write in the first person (i.e. I think), the third person is more appropriate for college level writing (i.e. we can conclude), but in any case it is preferable to avoid both styles and to state your argument (i.e. instead of saying “this essay will tackle the ways of thinking and the systems thinking approach”, you can start with a statement about system’s thinking in organizations). Similarly in your conclusion you should not use “it could be concluded”, rather simply restate the main points and your findings.

    TMA
    Second Semester 2017-2018
    Cut-off date: Week 10
    TMA
    Format and Word Count:
The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
    Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
    Writing and Discussion Topic:
The construction of any reputation is a complex process. The factors involved in shaping reputations remain varied, and the interplay of these factors adds to the complexity of the process. History tells us of leaders who have myths built around them and who have had up to this very day their reputations contested. Sometimes, and by some, these leaders are called nation builders, mass murderers, usurpers etc. Their memory lives on and so does the controversy surrounding them. The course book, Reputations deals with Cleopatra and Stalin as examples. Choose one such iconic “leader” (do NOT choose Cleopatra or Stalin) and discuss the issues involved in process of his/her reputation formation. Pay attention to the factors that could have contributed to his/her contested reputation and the role historical sources are made to operate. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to the leader of your choice:
    1) Identify the issues involved in setting the “leader” in his/her historical context.

    2) Discuss the role played by historical interpretation in shaping the “leader’s” reputation.

    3) Discuss how myths are constructed around this “leader”.

    4) Investigate the interplay of myth and history in constructing the “leader’s” reputation.

    5) Reflect on how different times and cultures make use of the past and its sources when constructing seemingly “irreconcilable” reputations of the same “leader”.

    Guidance on Addressing the Topic:
Before you embark on writing the essay, you need to read carefully Book 1 Reputations in order to familiarize yourself with the topic at large and make use of the skills presented in the book when writing your essay. You are strongly advised to consult sources on the topic and widen your knowledge of the topic under consideration, but it is of the utmost importance to document any words or ideas that are not your own. Once you have the material ready, it is advisable that you follow the steps (1-5) indicated in the section above to avoid omitting sub-questions. Although Units 1 and 5 of Book 1 on Cleopatra and Stalin are of immediate relevance to the TMA topic, you should demonstrate your knowledge of the complexity of the overarching concept of reputation as presented in all the units and not limit treatment solely to a particular treatment appearing in a single unit.
    Note on the PT3 Form:
The tutor’s comments that appear here on the PT3 form and on the script of the student’s TMA should be taken seriously by the student as mentioned in the Course Guide.
