The American linguist and critic Mary Louise Pratt has defined the contact zone as social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today. In light of the above definition, how does the contact zone unsettle categories of home and abroad in Doyles The Sign of Four and Stevensons The Beach of Falesa? How does it impact the representation of the domestic elementsin the stories? Compare and contrast its representation in both stories and comment on whether the encounter it allows between the different peoples and cultures is portrayed as a positive or problematic one. In what ways does the contact zone influence the lives of the major characters in the works? In your opinion, what might these representations tell us about the realities of imperialism, trade, migration and settlement in colonial England during the 19th century.
