    U214B TMA
    Semester 1, 2018-2019
    Cut-off date: Week 10
    Length: 1500-2000 words

    Question

The English writing system as argued by Hanley (2010) is a difficult system for children to learn. Discuss problems of learning to write in English, drawing on Reading A of Unit 3 in U214 course Book 2.

    Areas of Discussion

Areas of discussing the TMAs topic are related to U214B course Book 2, Units 1 & 2 and specifically Unit 3.

    Important Guidelines

Discussing the TMAs subject matter has to draw on the following ideas:
    1. The English writing system (5 pts)
    2. The relationship between spoken and written English (5pts)
    3. Advantages and disadvantages of English orthography (5 pts)
    4. Social perspectives on Literacy (5pts)
N.B. Students need to read in depth Unit 3, Reading A and think about the TMA questions as they read. Students need to take notes from Unit 3 on the social perspectives on literacy, grapheme phoneme relationship and the advantages and disadvantages of English.
When writing, students need to pay attention to structure, layout and correct language and use appropriate referencing and citation. Please note that, in addition to the textbook materials, students are strongly recommended to consult two or more of the following references.

    Using e-Library
 You can include information from the course book but it is highly recommended to use external sources from the e-library.
 You are requested to visit the e-library on campus and use it to carry out your TMAs properly.
 You are also requested to show your tutor that you used the e-library to complete your TMA. But avoid submitting a copy/paste paper, it is a plagiarized work, which is strictly banned and firmly penalized by AOU.

    Guidelines on Plagiarism

If you submit an assignment that contains work other than yours without acknowledging the sources, you are committing plagiarism. This might occur when:
Using a sentence or phrase that you have come across
Copying word-for-word directly from a text
Paraphrasing the words from the text very closely
Using text downloaded from the Internet
Borrowing statistics or assembled fact from another person or source
Copying or downloading figures, photographs, pictures or diagrams without acknowledging your sources
Copying from the notes or essays of a fellow student

(Slightly adapted from OU document on quoting versus plagiarism)

It is important to remember that plagiarism is strictly barred and would be subject to punitive action by the Arab Open University.

AA100B: The Arts Past and Present II

    AA100B
The Arts Past and Present II
    TMA
    Second Semester 2017-2018

    Cut-off date: Week 10
    TMA
    Format and Word Count:
The students work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
    Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
    Writing and Discussion Topic:
Cultural encounters can prove to be very enriching to all those involved, yet could prove very confusing and disrupting. In most cases these encounters lead to a conflict of values, both at the individual and societal levels. Explore how cultural encounters are manifested in literary works, specifically short stories from An Anthology of Short Stories from Five Continents, with particular reference to The Distant Past by William Trevor and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd by Ana Menendez. Both these stories talk of refugees, physically and/or emotionally, Cuban exiles in the US and Anglicans who once belonged in Ireland.
In the process of answering the TMA, you should make sure to include the below five sub questions:
    1) How is the concept of cultural encounter treated similarly in the two short stories: The Distant Past and In Cuba I was a German Shepherd?
    2) Are the authors, William Trevor and Ana Menendez, aware of the cultural encounter theme? How do they manifest that awareness?
    3) Are the main characters in both short stories aware of the cultural encounter theme? What clues do they provide of such awareness? How similar are their expressions of this awareness?
    4) How do the incidents of the Friday visit to town in The Distant Past and the arrival of the white busses in In Cuba I was a German Shepherd highlight the theme of cultural encounter?
    5) How does the usage of contrasts (present versus past, now versus then) throughout the short stories help in highlighting the theme of cultural encounter?
