AOU would like to develop a Web Based Social Network System between a job seeker and Industry
Recruiter. This system will be expected to provide communication among people , provide the features of
writing and posting a post or any event all at one place, to share the job related details posted by university
career guidance officer via adding a post which can be read by all the students as well as members of
faculty using the website. This web application will be controlled by the AOU IT administrator and can be
used by the career guidance officer and students as well as faculty members.
The following features will be implemented in proposed system:
Students can register and login into the system once their registration is approved by the administrator.
The system verifies the user id and password.
Once the student logging into the system, he/she can write and post an article on various topic of
his/her choice. Also he/she can chat with the other students.
Students can also upload images with their post.
All students can view News Feed posted by individual student.
AOU IT Administrator has full authority on system, he/she can add/delete Students and members of Faculty
Career Guidance Officer can create a list of students by specifying the department and criteria. This list will include personal details, academic details and GPA. He /she can perform activities only after logging into the system.
Career Guidance Officer can add post and it will be sent for approval to admin.
Faculty members will be able view students profiles and also can post event whose details will be sent via SMS to students. Faculty members can perform activities only after logging into the system.
As per the policy, all the students registration will be approved/rejected by the administrator as
well as, all the post will be kept pending until administrator approves/rejects each and every post.
The university management wished to have a website with two colors matching with their logo. The system is expected to handle up to 1000 users simultaneously and shall be able to be modified to cope with a new class of user.

It is desired to develop a database for the university scenario mentioned in Question-2. The university
would desire to have a system to keep track of its students, news feeds, images, faculty members and
employees.
You are required to answer Questions 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 from the below given scenario.
The university has registered with a registration number, description, address and phone number. The
university is contracted with many employees, the employees can be faculty members, IT administrators
and Career Guidance Officers. There are many students registered in the university. For every employee,
the system will store an employee id, first name, middle name, last name, address, telephone number and
job title. For each student the system keeps a student id, first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, telephone number and address will record as their details.
The website will be created by the university to provide the features of writing and posting a post or any event all at one place, the events are uploaded as news feeds or sometimes images. The students may post one or many events, there are two types of events: news feeds and images. The students are able to read events posted by other students. After every event the system updates the events happened. The employees are able to make the updates whenever necessary. An event will be identified by event Id, description and Type. All the events are updated by the employees with an event ID, Date and Time of the event happened.

In November 2008, Shaws supermarkets sold a 10-ounce bag of Green Mountain Fair Trade certified coffee for $8.49. The bag which was adorned with the Fair Trade certified logo, did not explain the meaning of Fair Trade. Consumers were directed to a website or a phone number to get more information. However, the bag did say the following:
A good cup of coffee can change your day. A great cup of coffee can help change the world. By supporting farming communities, promoting sound environmental practices and sourcing only the highest quality beans we work to ensure that everyone who comes in contact with our coffee benefits. So while you appreciate the results in your cup, you can also rest assured that this coffee has had a positive impact on every person it has touched which to us makes these little beans a pretty big deal.
The main premise of Fair Trade was that farmers were given a guaranteed fair price for their coffee, a guarantee that became particularly appealing to farmers in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the price of coffee fell below the cost of production. For knowledgeable consumers, this was a positive reinforcement knowing that they were helping a social cause even though it was not clear on any bag of Fair Trade coffee just how much farmers were being paid and how much they were profiting.
The organization responsible for certifying food products (including coffee) as Fair Trade was the Fairtrade Labeling Organization (FLO). Based in Bonn, Germany, FLO was an umbrella organization that united 20 labeling initiatives in 21 countries and producer networks. But with a market share of Less than 3.8% of the coffee market and 6.1% of the specialty coffee market, and a growth rate that had plunged from 97% in 2003 to 2% in 2007, the leadership of FLO found itself at a crossroads. Pressures were mounting inside and outside the organization to grow market share for Fair Trade certified coffee, and stakeholders were divided on how best to do this.

You are required to write no more than 1,500 words, but you will also need to present some of your findings in graphical or tabular form. Please indicate at the end of your essay the number of words you have used.
Before you start this assignment, refer to the general guidance on completing and submitting your assignments on page 41 in the course guides booklet that you have received with the package.
Task 1 (selection of texts)
Choose two texts by native speakers/writers of English from two different registers: one text should be spoken (a natural conversation/dialogue between two or more speakers) about any subject taken from TV, radio, magazine, newspaper or any other source) and the other text should be written (academic prose) text in English taken from any academic source. The written text can be about any specialized subject (e.g. medicine, law, education, arts, politics etc.). Each text should be about 200-250 words in length. The texts you choose should be RECENT; i.e. published over the last 2- 3 weeks. You can access most daily newspapers, magazines or academic proceedings on the internet.
You should expect to spend a reasonable amount of time selecting your texts, as your choice of text will potentially affect the quality of your answer. Do not be afraid to reject your initial choice if you come across something better, since you will inevitably have gained insights from the process of selection. However, you need to remember to leave yourself enough time to spend on the analysis of your chosen texts.
Important Notes:
1. Your chosen texts MUST be approved by your tutor to make sure they are the proper texts for the TMA, otherwise your TMA will not be accepted.
2. You should write an introduction to the TMA at the very beginning of the page on which you are beginning the TMA. Also, you should write a conclusion to the whole TMA at the end in which you sum up what you have done in the TMA and state your own evaluation and opinion of the TMA.
3. In an appendix attach a photocopy or a printout of the two texts you have used for analysis.
4. Indicate in a very clear manner the source and date of publication of each text.
Task 2 (analyzing the experiential meanings with special reference to coherence and cohesive devices)
You should type the two texts (200-250 words) in your TMA.
In this task you should analyze the experiential meanings in the two texts as outlined in Book 3, Unit 13, section 4 using the SFL aspects and analytical methodology. You can also refer to Unit 15 and 16 for more information, illustration and practice that are relevant to this TMA.
You need to clarify how cohesive devices are deployed to build experiential and interpersonal meanings to create a coherent text; how cohesive patterns are interpreted in relation to the contextual variable of mode and in terms of their role in building those experiential and interpersonal meanings and why certain uses of lexical cohesion make a text more or less effective.
Task 3 (comparison of the 2 texts; 750-1000 word essay)
In this task you should write an essay (750-1000 words) in which you discuss, explain and compare the two media articles depending on the findings provided by the raw text analysis you performed in Task 2. You should suggest reasons for, and communicative effects of, the differences (i.e. differences in views and ideas of the same event/topic). You should illustrate your discussion/comparison with examples taken from the two texts you analyzed in Task 2.
Note: You can use tables, graphs and any other formats to do the tasks properly and make them convenient and easy to follow. You could also use appendices to tabulate the results of the 2 articles.

Practical Problem
This course is designed to mainly develop the programming skills of learners. In addition, the students should critically think to resolve problems. From this concept, this TMA is prepared.
In this TMA, each student is asked to write a java program which can calculate the average grades of the courses that has been completed by each particular student during the last two semesters Spring 16/17 and Fall 17/18. Please go through the following specification in order to complete this TMA successfully:
The program can be implemented using either JApplet or JFrame classes.
The courses and grades that was completed on Spring 16/17 should be hard-coded as variables in the code itself (e.g. int M105=80) and the grades should match your marks according to the SIS records.
The courses and grades that was completed on Fall 17/18, should be read through a GUI interface as follows:
o The user should be asked to enter the number (n) of courses completed on Fall 17/18.
o Based on the entered number and after pressing the button Click, the GUI should show n text fields to allow the user enter the course code and the corresponding grade as shown in the Figure below:
After entering the grades of the courses (according to your transcript from SIS), the student should press the button Calculate Average on the GUI.
This button should calculate the average of all courses studied in the two semesters. The program should calculate the average grade by summing up the total marks of the hard-coded courses in the program + the marks of the courses entered on the GUI interface, then divide it over the total number of courses as per the example below:
Hard-coded courses in Spring 16/17
int m105 = 70
int m129 = 88
int T175A = 77
GUI courses in Fall 17/18
When pressing Calculate Average, the result should be ((70+88+77) + (90+55+65+78))/7 = 74.2%
Important notes:
Copy & Past is not allowed and subjected to AOU plagiarism policy.
All the marks used in the code and entered in the GUI should exactly match the student transcript from SIS.
A copy from your transcript extracted from SIS should be included in the submitted file.
