Overview of Three SSDs Lexar NS100 capacities: 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB

The American company Lexar is a well-known manufacturer of Flash memory systems with more than twenty years of history. We can find on sale a lot of memory cards for digital cameras and portable equipment from this manufacturer, as well as USB-Flash drives and many other devices. Currently, three new Lexar SSDs based on the Marvell platform and 3D TLC memory got to my test right away. Disks differ in capacities: 120 GB (LNS100-120RBEU), 240 GB (LNS100-240RBEU) and 480 GB (LNS100-480RBEU), while maintaining a single line with the name Lexar NS100.

Theory and Positioning

Despite the fact that Lexar is a well-known manufacturer of equipment based on Flash-memory, SSDs of this brand are not so widely represented in the Russian market. But to miss this opportunity is to lose the growing market, so we can see the new budget Lexar NS100 series of disks appearing right now on the shelves of domestic stores.

First, take a look at the device specifications. The developer indicates readspeeds that range from 520 MB / s to 550 MB / s on a more capacious and older model. The entire line of drives, in fact, is represented by these three models. NS100 series refers to the budget, based on the Marvell 88NV1120 controller, created using DramLess technology and not the most expensive memory. True, this does not tell us absolutely nothing about its typical performance, except that it indicates some limitations for peak efficiency.Prices for devices in Russia look very good, although so far they are found only in some well-known networks. For example, you can expect approximately the interval 1300 - 1500 p. for a drive of 120 GB, which is at about minimum marks for low-cost solutions. Thus, if the drives turn out to be successful in terms of combining performance characteristics, then they will have every chance to win the love of the public, and if not, they will be lost among the general mass of inexpensive SSDs.

Appearance and features of the models Lexar NS100

All three models look the same and come in equal packages, so in the photo I will use three models at once. So, the packaging for the series looks simple, but done in good faith. It should be opened with caution, as it is sealed very tightly and can easily break.

It shows the device and some characteristics. Also, a numerical display of the capacity of the device inside was taken out to the box.

Inside the package, the discs are in an open plastic box, in which they are firmly fixed. As a complete set, the manufacturer applies a user manual and instructions for working with the warranty.

The disks are made completely identical, by the top cover you can never find out where the drive is of what capacity. The devices are created in a plastic case with a noticeable rough surface on which the company logo flaunts.

On the back, on the contrary, there are labels, and already on them all three discs are easily distinguished, or rather according to the markings on them.

Opening the enclosures and gaining access to the printed circuit boards, we again encounter the same design of the enclosures. All are securely fastened to plastic snaps.

Very small printed circuit boards are installed inside, occupying less than 50% of the case. In all three versions, regardless of size, the same Marvell 1120 controller is used and the same number of memory chips 4 pieces - 2 pieces each. chips on each side.

The chip markings are different, since SSD drives use memory chips of different manufacturers, although they are marked under their own brand.

  • 120 GB (LNS100-120RBEU): YNCIBMG-128G
  • 240 GB (LNS100-240RBEU): TS256G181
  • 480 GB (LNS100-480RBEU): TS7512G181

We can find out what is hidden under these markings (in the case of these particular models)
thanks to the low-level utilities of marvell flash id and this is what we see:

Lexar NS100 LNS100-120RBEU (120 GB) model uses 64-layer Micron 3D TLC chips

The Lexar NS100 LNS100-240RBEU (240 GB) versions are installed, in fact, similar micron chips of increased density.

Lexar NS100 LNS100-120RBEU (480 GB) modification is based on Sandisk 3D TLC chips. It's time to move on to the test results.

Lexar NS100 SSD Speed : LNS100-120RBEU, LNS100-240RBEU, LNS100-480RBEU

The ATTO Disk Benchmark test, as the first sign of performance, revealed that the new series has no problems with this. In terms of reading speed, the devices managed to achieve a result of 525 MB / s for all capacities. All three results are excellent. High write speed is much more difficult for disks with low capacity, therefore, according to this discipline, the 120 GB version was slightly down, getting mostly 435 MB / s, while 240 GB and 480 GB offer up to 455 MB / s.

CrystalDiskMark is even a little more supportive of devices. Please note that all drives showed high values in the 4K reading column, which practically do not differ from labor and this is 40 MB / s. This means that even a low-capacity drive will work with the OS and system operations almost as well as higher-capacity SSDs. Linear speeds are not surprising and already fit into the picture obtained earlier - 550 MB / s for all three devices, as in the textbook. Recording varies slightly, 439 MB / s for 120 GB and 474 MB / s for more capacious variations.

IOPS values still vary slightly depending on capacity. Versions of 120 GB and 240 GB received almost identical results, but 480 GB Lexar NS100 LNS100-480RBEU was able to demonstrate a small margin.

The test in Aja System test was extremely interesting. This benchmark will show us how well discs handle high-capacity recording. Devices are equipped (like most models on the market) with 3D TLC memory type and therefore must have certain caching technologies for fast recording at full speed. But only for a number of disks this “buffer” is quite small, up to 1-2 GB, after which the speed can drop by almost 10 times, usually 3-4 times. This buffer, as a rule, depends on the capacity of the device, and for 480 GB it is much higher than for 120 GB.

Result Lexar NS100 120 GB (LNS100-120RBEU)

Lexar NS100 Result 240GB (LNS100-240RBEU)

Result Lexar NS100 480 GB (LNS100-480RBEU)It is 120 GB disks that are vulnerable to write drops on high-capacity files, since their buffer is often full (not to be confused with the controller's buffer memory). Amazingly, all drives got a high level of performance on a large file. That 480 GB that 240 GB did not receive any reduction in speeds at all, their schedule is perfectly even throughout the 64 GB segment and of course this is a compliment for a 240 GB disk. As for the younger model, its result is much more modest, however, it was also able to record over 30 GB of data at full speed! This is a very good result for a TLC SSD with such a small capacity.

In the graphs of PC Mark 8 Storage Bandwidth (divided by their capacity classes), the disks were also approximately the same. With about average results among other tested drives, namely 149 MB / s for a 120 GB model, 182 MB / s for a 240 GB version and 225 MB / s, the result is a 480 GB modification. Unless compared to other devices, which are quite numerous in the graphics, the 240 GB model looks a bit faded, but it showed an excellent and stable result in other tests.

Having tested the Lexar SSD line, which includes three models from a small 120 GB, the popular 240 GB and a capacious 480 GB, certain conclusions appeared. All three drives are equipped with the same type of filling based on 3D TLC chips and an inexpensive Marvell controller. The performance of the drives turned out to be quite good. The devices showed decent speeds for the SSD market with a SATA interface, an average of 550 MB / s linear read and up to 470 MB / s linear write. Only a 120 GB model is slightly weaker in terms of recording speeds. A confident and strong indicator can be considered high values of 4K, about 40 MB / s.
One of the big advantages of the line is the combination of price and performance. Obviously, it is at a very good level, because the disks are inexpensive, but they show indicators above average. I was also pleasantly surprised by the endurance of the 120 GB version when recording a large file.

When you start testing different models, you don’t know how it will end, and when there are several models, it can be assumed that the weaker of them will fit the smaller type of tasks. With the Lexar line of drives, I can say for sure that if you have enough capacity, then even the 120 GB (LNS100-120RBEU) model looks great like a drive for work and in general, a drive for installing the OS and applications. The 240 GB (LNS100-240RBEU) model is absolutely universal, since it does not even hint at lower speeds, and the capacity itself is enough to solve most of the tasks of installing basic programs, applications for work and several games. The 480 GB (LNS100-480RBEU) version is ideal for any task, as it has all the advantages of the already mentioned drives, but even in a wider expression.
